Slip and Fall Accident Causes

Accidents involving a slip, trip or fall may be caused by any number of hazards, including sidewalks, stairs and walkways that are unsafe for a variety of reasons including poor lighting, missing handrails or supports, faulty railings, snow, ice, rain uneven surfaces, broken areas, poorly marked steps, misaligned edges and cracks, and poorly kept carpet, rugs or mats. Other causes of slips, trips or falls include food, water or other substances on floors in restaurants or supermarkets, objects left where they shouldn’t be, and a wide variety of other causes.

Consequences

These kinds of accidents can have dire consequences such as broken bones and other debilitating injuries. Slip and fall accidents cause a great many injuries, and are second only to motor vehicle accidents as a cause of serious injuries. There can be factors which complicate an injury especially diabetes, age, prior illnesses. Also, certain injuries may be more debilitating to one person than another due to the person’s daily life requirements, activities and job.

Responsibility/Liability

Property owners, lessors, landlords and property managers have a responsibility to keep their premises safe; and when they fail to do so, they may be liable for injury and damages. When such falls involve a municipality or other public entity, litigation can be complicated and extensive. Also, when a governmental entity is involved, you may have a shorter period of time in which to bring your claim. There may be reporting requirements, some as short as six months. No matter who the responsible party is, it is best to have your interests represented by an experienced slip and fall attorney who knows how to get you the maximum compensation, whether by settlement or through trial.
